Acupuncture is an eastern medical practice that involves the insertion of needles into specific areas of the body. This process causes the body to release endorphins a natural chemical which help to decrease the perception of pain. The overall goal is to reduce pain while increasing circulation and stimulating muscles and nerves throughout the body.
The most common concern about acupuncture is the fear of needles. However, acupuncture needles are very thin compared to the needles used for injection. You will feel a slight pressure upon insertion of an acupuncture needle but once it is in the muscle there should be no pain. After the session some people report feeling very relaxed while others feel energized.
Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body in order to improve the flow of blood and lymph. Massage can reduce muscular tension or flaccidity, affect the nervous system through stimulation or sedation, and enhance tissue healing.
Some pain or discomfort may be experienced during the session. Pain is an indication of an area that may need more work or in some cases a referral to a physician.
